M-Pesa Website Payments in Kenya: What to Plan Before Development
A payment button is not a payment operation
The visible part of an M-Pesa checkout can look simple. The business still has to decide what happens when a payment succeeds, fails, arrives late, is duplicated, or is followed by a refund request.
The technical interface is only one part of the commercial process.
Define the customer journey
Before development, write down the path from product or service selection to payment confirmation, fulfilment, customer notification, reconciliation, cancellation, and support.
If the business cannot explain what happens after payment, the website is not ready for a payment integration.
Clarify provider responsibility
The project should identify the payment provider, account owner, credentials, fees, settlement arrangements, support path, and data responsibilities. These details cannot be safely assumed from the words “M-Pesa integration.”
M-Pesa may be part of an ecommerce project, but it is not automatically included in every website engagement. It should be separately scoped and confirmed alongside delivery, stock, refunds, and customer support.
That is why ecommerce website cost in Kenya depends on operations as much as on design.
Test the failure paths
Test more than the successful payment. Consider incorrect references, interrupted sessions, duplicate submissions, delayed confirmation, unavailable products, partial fulfilment, refunds, and a customer who needs help.
